This is my first post for The Old Geek Guy.
The reason for this site is to offer step by step instructions to supplement my YouTube channel. For many this may seem too simple but the audience I'm trying to reach are those that are older, and have physical limitations.
I myself have certain limitations including Macular Degeneration (MD), Drop Foot, hearing problems that make me use hearing aids and other typical old people problems.
In my first YouTube presentation I'm mention some of these points. But here I would like to expand somewhat on a couple of them. The most bothersome is my MD. MD is a condition that older people get rather than younger. However, some younger people do suffer as well. MD affects the central vision of the retina. In severe cases it cause total blur and blockout of central focus. This makes it impossible to drive, read and even navigate walking.
But, technology has advanced tremendously for people who suffer from MD and many other physical disabilities. Most of what I'll be demonstrating is cell phone, tablet, computer and even TV use.
To date I have published information on using the iPhone for visually impaired as well as the iPad. Apple is the only system I use, not necessarily because I feel it is the best but simply because the phone, iPad, Apple TV and even the Apple Watch all work together to make seamless compatibility. If you use Android phones , tablets and watches use should use Android primarily and not try to combine Apple with Oranges (Android).
Here are a few pictures to show, more or less, how my sight is affected.
This above is about what I see in my right eye
Left eye Amsler Chart |
Although I can't find an example of my left eye vision, this is about where my MD is active. I still see OK in the center. But, Read on!
Several years ago I suffered from Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (ION). This is another condition that limits your eye site. However, this condition can affect many areas of site, not just central. In fact, both of my eyes have this condition but my right eye is much less affected. My left eye vision is affected just at the central focus point upwards and to the left of my eye vision as well. This limits my peripheral vision that is badly needed for MD. Not the combination you want to have.
There are no images online to download to show because everyone is totally different, unlike MD where everyone suffers central focus.
So, here's hoping that some of my experience on electron devices over the years will help you too.
